We are Diana and Ken from Nanaimo, BC, Canada. In early November 2013 we will embark on a six month adventure, which will take us from Vancouver Island on the west coast of Canada, to the United States, Mexico, Central America, South America and back.
Riding two up
on a BMW R1200GS Adventure dual sport motorcycle we will travel approximately
40,000 kilometres, exploring all twenty two countries of mainland North, Central, and
South America. That’s the plan anyway!
Over the last
three years we have spent our vacations travelling throughout the western
United States on a Harley Davidson Ultra Classic. Riding two up with a tent
trailer in tow we crisscrossed the deserts, plains, mountains, and coastal
regions of western North America, accumulating countless miles and stories
along the way.Our time spent travelling the United States inspired us to venture further afield, and thus the idea of a six month motorcycle trip was born. With this decision came the realization that we would require a new motorcycle. We sold our much loved Harley and purchased a dual sport BMW capable of handling the rugged terrain.
Although the
majority of our six months abroad will be spent travelling, we plan to spend
two weeks in Guatemala working with the not-for-profit organization Constru
Casa. Working alongside professional masons we will help to construct a home
for a deserving family near the capital of Antigua. While there we will be
living in a homestay situation where we hope to greatly improve our Spanish
language skills (which are currently reallllly lacking!).
We hope to use this blog to keep in touch with
family and friends back home in Canada. We have also had business-type cards
with our blog address and other contact info created, which we intend to hand
out to new friends made during our travels. We will do our best to update the
blog as often as possible, but we are new to the blog-o-sphere so please be
patient with us- this blog is a learning experience and a work in progress!
Good morning.... Glad you're off to a good start on your long awaited dream trip! Your blog is great...keep us updated !! Safe riding...Pete and Bon
